We redesigned gov.lk, the official government information and services portal. The goal was to create a modern, user-friendly platform that provides citizens with seamless access to government information and online services. Our solution balances a scalable technical framework with a unified, accessible, and consistent design that supports millions of users nationwide.
The Challenge
The existing platform was fragmented, with inconsistent user experiences across ministries, departments, and services. Each service often operated in isolation with different designs, content structures, and backend systems. This made navigation confusing and scalability difficult. Additionally, the platform lacked standardized branding, multilingual accessibility, and a smooth way to integrate secure services like Digital ID or biometric authentication.
What We Did
We designed a unified, modular system combining an Information Portal for static content and a Services Platform for interactive, transactional services. Despite having separate backends, databases, and authentication systems, all services now share a consistent UI and navigation. We developed a centralized design system, introduced multilingual and accessibility improvements, and implemented standardized components like email notifications. The content management system was designed to be flexible—allowing management by a central team or distributed teams at the ministry or department level.
